A screening, not a diagnosis.
Important. SmileSafe AI is a screening tool, not a medical service. The AI scan does not diagnose any condition. Only a licensed dentist can examine you, diagnose issues, and recommend treatment.
SmileSafe AI helps you understand the general state of your dental health using artificial intelligence — but it cannot replace a real visit to a dentist.
What SmileSafe AI is
SmileSafe AI is a preliminary screening tool. When you take a scan at one of our kiosks or through our app, our AI looks at the photos of your teeth and gives you a high-level overview:
- An overall oral health score (a number from 0–100)
- A severity level: healthy, watch, or attention
- A short, plain-language summary of what was observed
- A simplified tooth-by-tooth chart highlighting areas of concern
What SmileSafe AI is not
SmileSafe AI is not:
- A medical device approved by the FDA, EMA, or any regulatory body
- A substitute for a clinical dental examination
- A diagnostic tool — it cannot diagnose cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, or any other condition
- A treatment recommendation system
- A tool for emergencies or urgent dental care
If you are experiencing severe pain, swelling, bleeding, fever, or trauma to your teeth or jaw — do not rely on SmileSafe AI. Contact a dentist or go to an emergency room immediately.
Limitations of AI screening
You should be aware of the following limitations:
Image quality matters
The accuracy of any AI screening depends on the quality, lighting, and angle of the photos. Poor photos may lead to incomplete or inaccurate results. The AI may miss issues that are not visible from the angles you provide.
The AI sees what's visible
Photos can only show the surfaces of your teeth and visible gum line. Many dental issues — including problems below the gum, between teeth, in the bone, or inside the tooth — cannot be detected from photos alone. A dentist uses X-rays, palpation, and clinical examination to find these.
The AI can be wrong
Like any AI system, SmileSafe AI may produce false positives (flagging healthy areas as concerning) or false negatives (missing real problems). Always verify findings with a licensed dentist.
It does not replace a dentist's judgment
Your dentist sees you in person, reviews your medical history, takes X-rays, performs a clinical exam, and uses years of training to make decisions. The AI does none of that.
What you should do with your scan results
- "Healthy" results are not a guarantee that everything is fine. Continue regular dental check-ups (typically every 6 months).
- "Watch" results mean the AI noticed something that may be worth a dentist's review. Schedule a non-urgent visit within the next few weeks.
- "Attention" results mean the AI flagged something that should be reviewed by a dentist soon. Book an appointment as quickly as you can.
- Regardless of your scan result, see a dentist regularly. The scan is a starting point, not a replacement.
For dentists using SmileSafe
If you are a licensed dentist using SmileSafe AI to review patient scans through our partner dashboard:
- The AI summary and findings are provided as a convenience, not as clinical advice
- You remain solely responsible for diagnosing and treating each patient based on your own clinical examination
- You should treat AI findings as a possible starting point for conversation with your patient — not as a confirmed diagnosis
- SmileSafe AI does not establish a doctor-patient relationship between SmileSafe and the patient
No doctor-patient relationship
Using SmileSafe AI does not create a doctor-patient relationship between you and SmileSafe AI or any of its employees. A doctor-patient relationship is established only when you visit a licensed dentist in person.
Emergency situations
If you are experiencing a dental emergency — severe pain, broken teeth, uncontrolled bleeding, swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, signs of infection (fever + facial swelling), or trauma — do not use SmileSafe AI. Go to an emergency room or contact a dentist immediately.
In the United States, you can also call 911 for emergencies, or 211 for help finding urgent dental care.
Disclaimer of warranties
SmileSafe AI is provided "as is" without any warranty of any kind, either express or implied. We do not warrant that the AI scan will be accurate, complete, reliable, or free from errors. To the fullest extent permitted by law, SmileSafe AI disclaims all liability for any harm or damage arising from your use of the platform, including reliance on AI screening results in lieu of professional dental care.
